Ok i so i have a fairly decent laptop that i use for games, it came with 4gb of ram at 1333mhz, but i decided to stick a 1gb 800mhz chip in aswell as it wasnt being used.

Now i know this wont really increase gaming performance, infact not at all, but it wont damage my systems performance either right? i cant help shake the feeling its using more resources to run the extra 1gb than it benefits from it.

Could someone answer? will it matter? should i just go back to the one 4gb chip?

If you don't need it, I wouldn't.
Not because it will hurt anything, because it down clocks all your RAM to 800Mhz

Check the performance tab in Task manager to see if you are using all your RAM

you will be fine, having two dims should make your system faster, even though the 1333mhz stick will downclock to 800mhz.

however, when you can afford it, I'd get a 1333mhz 4GB stick so you have 1333mhz 8GB of RAM which will make your system faster.

Are you sure it will downclock? i use MSI Afterburner to get a little more power out of the system and i set it to exactely 1120Mhz, but am i being lied to, is it infact downclocked anyway?

Does not matter what you set the utility to, unless that RAM is being overclocked, you are running your system at a slower speed.

Simple to find out if what you did changed things.

Install PassMark. Run it 3 times with the 5 gig of RAM, with a reboot between each run. Note the RAM score and overall score.

Remove the 1gb stick and run it 3 times with the single 4 gig stick, reboot same as before between each test. Get the average of those two runs and compare them.
