the fx 6300 is more comparable to the i5 not the core i3 so it shoyuld be better of the two ,,however i suggest you stay on the intel route not because of bias but because of lower temps and less power usage and in most case more performance ..

I vote for the i3-4130.

Few games can use more than 2-3 cores, making the extra cores of the FX-6300 of not much use.
In general, faster cores are better for gaming.
Intel haswell cores are perhaps 30% faster per clock.

Here is an older report which included a FX-6300 and a i3-3220 which is a bit slower than a i3-4130.

power usage is not a problem and i have two case fans so would the fx 6300 be a better choice

the 4130 is faster in single threaded applications while the fx6300 is faster in multi threaded application .. there are more games being optimised for mor than two cores now so it would be smart to get the extra boost plus a few more cores..the fx 6300 is much better at multitasking so you can play music while playing games and still do other stuff without a hit..

bty the way the fx 6300 only uses 95w so its not really power hungry at all

Get the FX-6300. For $100 ($20 cheaper than the i3) you are getting the biggest bang for your buck with the 6300. You are getting 6 cores compared to the i3's 2, a Massively higher cache space, (6MB L2 and 8 MB L3 on the FX-6300, only a puny 3MB of L3 Cache on the i3) a slight stock speed improvement, (3.5 Ghz on the FX-6300, 3.4 Ghz on the i3) And the ability to Overclock that FX-6300. Hook up the 6300 with a R9 270X or higher, and You'll be able to play almost every game at 1080p no problem.

Once you buy the FX-6300, you won't have to upgrade for a long while.

The fx-6300 has very weak cores, so unless a games uses all 6, it's pretty poor. I'd get the I3.

The only time the fx 6300 will do better is in video editing and games that utilize 4 or more cores. Id say 60-80% of the games use 2-3 cores max, id say go with the i3.

the cores are not that weak .. it outperform the i3 in multithreaded applications and has more cores so is better for heavy apps and multitasking .. intel is generally better but in this comparison the fx 6300 beats the dual core i3 ..

This makes little sense. Lol. I would be surprised if six "physical" cores lost out to a true dual core with respect to multi-threaded applications. The FX 6300 beats the i3 4130 in multithreading only, nothing else. So yes, the cores are relatively weak. Not to mention the FX 6300 doesn't even have six true cores. They're shared.

@OP : i3 4130. With hyperthreading it'll out perform the FX 6300 in most every application that doesn't use 5-6 concurrent threads. Games don't usually use anything over two to four threads.

simple as this fx 6300 =better for heavy programs and rendering and multitasking and is more future friendly for games or i3= faster in single threaded apllications and will soon be obsolete because of having only two cores ? current games generally 2 to 3 cores yes so what happens when you want to play a game that eats 3 cores and you have an i3 ? the answer is you get lags and will be forced to turn down the details or not play at all .. the fx 6300 is a great bang for the buck and has more good than bad compared to the i3 4130 .. im an intel person and i would like to suggest an intel processor but in fairness we dont want the op to be thinking about another processor upgrade as soon as he gets a i3 ... the fx 6300 is faster and is relatively cheap compared to most intel high end cpu's ...

@op : its your decision

The i3-4130 has hyper threading, so 3 core with a dual core cpu isint a problom. The time that the fx6300 will show its true power is if you overclock it. Then, the fx would more then likely pull ahead by 5 frames.

ok so what about games that eats up alot of cores uh ? what if watch dogs comes into the pictures would the i3 be better then uh ?
you are talking nonsense about pull ahead by 5 frames ,its bit more powerful than that and will get more fps without oc'ing

Another vote for the I3 4130. I think you'll be extremely surprised at how well it does with games.

I play Watch Dogs with an i3 4130 with no problem at all. Myth busted
