I had this error happen a few times before but I always thought it was caused by hardware installation. Today I had it happen in the middle of the day, when the last thing I installed was a few days ago. Essentially the screen went black, the computer was still on but I couldn't do anything. I had to shut it off manually and power it back on. After it turned on, the keyboard wouldn't work (that is the usual case) so I had to run a recovery to a few days ago because apparently a number of my drivers were deleted.

There are no errors beside the shut down one in the event viewer. I am using Windows 8.1, an MSI Z97-G55 mobo, 2x4GB RAM, Sapphire r9 290 Vapor-X, EVGA 850W PSU, Intel i5-4690k, Asus VS247H-P monitor and Gigabyte Force USB keyboard.

I had my GPU RMAd recently and ran a number of tests on it so that should be working fine. I also ran memory test for my RAM and that passed. I believe it might be a software, a PSU or a mobo issue but I really don't want to redo the whole process again. What steps can I take to check which part it is exactly? I do not have a second PC nor any extra parts lying around either :/  Thanks for any help!

I would begin by visiting your motherbds support site and installing their latest bios (which fixes some keybd bugs among other things).
http://us.msi.com/support/mb/Z97G55_SLI.html#down-bios

If problems still persist I would then install/re-install the latest drivers followed by windows updates.
