I currently have a VGA monitor, thinking of buying a new one. Is VGA good enough for use these days? Or should I buy a new one?

It depends on the picture quality and the resolution of the VGA monitor you have.
But since the gfx card produces a digital display and the flat panel uses a digital signal, the conversion from digital to analog (VGA) and back again is only weakening the signal, wasting energy, and lowering its quality.

I would recommend not getting a vga monitor as newer gpus will not support analog signal(vga) the r9 290 and 290x already do not support it the same with the 970 and 980. Dvi or HDMI would be better in the long run
