Hi all-

I OC'd my i5 4670K to 4.0 today, and during IBT, I noticed that cores 2 and 3 were about 10 degrees hotter than cores 1 and 4. Is this normal for an Intel chip, or do I need to re-apply my thermal paste? All 4 cores are the same temps when I'm doing anything else.

What cooler do you have

CM Hyper 212+, with the stock fan set as intake. The rest of my fan setup is 1 120mm Noctua fan as intake in the front, 1 140mm Noctua on the top as intake, ans 1 120mm stock NZXT fan in the rear as exhaust. I have a NZTX Tempest 210 case.

Try reseating cooler or applying new thermal paste

I've heard plenty of anecdotes that Haswell and Ivy Bridge chips do this because of the TIM used underneath the IHS. I personally experience this on the 4th core of my i7 4790k and I've tried 4 different coolers, three different thermal pastes and 4 different application methods of the thermal paste and each one repeats the same results.

Now this doesn't necessarily mean this is the case with your processor. It seems the running theme with the problem with TIM is that at idle, the temps on all cores will be almost the same but when you put them under load one of them will remain cooler and typically, the hotter the other cores get, the wider the gap becomes between the hotter cores and the cooler core (for instance, my cores all idle at about 24 C but when stress testing with three cores at 85 C, the 4th core will be almost 10 degrees colder). If the difference between the hottest core and the coldest core stay constant at both idle and load, there's a good chance it's a fault of your heatsink application.

Thanks for all the advise guys. I reapplied thermal paste today, as well as cleaning out all the dust buildup between the fins on the CPU cooler, and still have the temps issue. It's fine on idle, but on a 4.5 OC, in IBT, cores 2 and 3 were hovering at 99-100, and 1 and 4 were at 89-90. I guess at some point soon I'll delid it and get some high end thermal paste, and reapply it to everything.
