Hi Guys. Ive had a 1TB hard almost a year now and I just bought a Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD.

On my Previous Setup I had 3 partitions. C with the OS. D for Backup and E for Storage. Storage contains most of all my files. Backup is just an occasional backup and C has the OS and Programs.

I will be starting fresh with Windows 8.1 on the SSD. Will also still have the Hard drive in the laptop as well so wondering do i need to partition the SSD ?

Solution
no, when an ssd fails its usually all of it dead. I have not serviced any pc's in which only some areas failed.

Keeping backup copies of important files is critical these days. I don't care what you keep them on, even a 20 cent dvd will last a few years, as long as you have them.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I wasn't clear I have a HP DV7t 7300 there is space for two hard drives. SO i will not be removing the Optical drive.

Is partition needed for longevity. I know like on HDD if partitioned and the drive fails you have all your files on the other parts. IS this necessary or important for SSD's as well ?

Hi popatim,
I currently have a 640GB HDD in the usual HDD place on my laptop and I have added a 250GB HDD in my optical bay. Both HDDs work fine although I do feel that the laptop is heating up faster. So now I am looking to buy the Samsung 840 Pro 128GB. How will I know if I can put it in my optical bay ?

Laptop Specs : Toshiba Satellite L755-1J2, 8GB RAM, Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM Processor

Thanks !
