For the life of me, I cannot figure out why my partner's Lenovo Thinkpad laptop will not boot past troubleshooting options. She told me that she received a kernal data inpage (or input) error. Once that happened, she restarted the computer and it locked her out from logging in to her account, it stated "user profile not found". From there, when she restarted it, it tried to automatically repair, and failed. I have tried to troubleshoot the laptop. Resetting, nor refreshing worked. System restore and image restore did not work. Using the command prompt, I was unable to rebuild/fix the master boot record. I also cannot enter safe mode, I tried various ways... such as F8, shift F-8, shift windows F8. Any thoughts concerning this?

No- not with lap top. My Lap top does not beep. Hard drives often fail slowly. I had hard drive failure once and it also could not find user account and logged me in as a new user and all data was not accessible. Now safe mode options do not appear readily when you press F4. It is hidden. I do not remember exact sequence- look up online "how to enter safe mode". The repair options not show up and you may have to use Command Prompt to activate it. It has been a while, but I know there is walk through on line. You can take out the hard drive and run it on desktop and see if desktop would boot from it.

I forgot to mention that I had tried to boot in safe mode through command prompt, which did not work. I also ran a chkdsk, with no errors. I am going to find my USB drive and try to load a new Win 8 on it, but other than that I do not know what to do. Maybe you are right about the HD, but I don't know. Thanks! Just noticed this is the error I get after the automatic repair fails: Log file: C:/windows/system32/logfiles/srt/srttrail.txt
