Do Tiger or Newegg sell any cases reminiscent of the late '90s or early '00s? I have refurbished an old PC circa 2000 and it currently resides in a crappy temporary chassis. Please help me do it justice.

If you are still in school, try talking directly to the IT guy(s), they might even take an interest in your project. If you still live by your last school of attendance, try the same thing or call them.
Don't know where you live, but calling the school district office or a specific school and getting in touch with the IT dept. might work.
Might try contacting your Internet Service Providers local office, they might have something laying around.
I mentioned the second-hand stores as I was at one about 4 years ago and they had two or...
Just spent about 20 minutes looking on Newegg: didn't find anything.
But here's a thought or two: You might have to mod the case interior a bit, but check with local schools and/or school districts, businesses, and especially gov't. offices and see if they have any of their old PC's or cases that they would be willing to give to you or sell really cheaply.
A few years back I scored my youngest grandson his first PC from a school district for $2. It was really old but all that he needed (he has upgraded substantially since then) and I helped a fellow worker get a PC from the same district for $1 when her PC died. Nope not fast, but all you want is an old case.
MaximumPC's Dream Machine for 2013 might be worth looking at: they used a modern case but had it painted a classic beige.

I wanted to avoid spending for full systems but boutique computers can't possibly be so expensive to dissuade me from grabbing one for the case.

The painful part is that I just threw away a bunch of old (bud damaged) chassis.

Seriously, check with schools, medical facilities and offices, etc. The PC I helped my fellow employee buy was quite and old Dell business machine and they had several older ones sitting around. Also, check the local Salvation Army store, Goodwill, any other second hand shop. Gotta be able to find one someplace that is Retro enough and usable and affordable.

I mentioned the second-hand stores as I was at one about 4 years ago and they had two or three PC's in some interesting cases, and had I been in the market probably could have had them for 2 or 3 dollars.
If you are here in the U.S., yard sales sometimes have them: I have sold two old pc's that way so I am sure there are others getting rid of broken pc's at their yard sales - just have to find the right one.
Another thought; check with a/some local computer repair shops: Preferably locally owned businesses, not Best Buy or Circuit City etc.
