CPU very high core temps

Using core temp I noticed that my cpu temps were pretty high. All six cores were running between low to high sixties Celsius at idle and during a game some almost hit 80!!

I have aftermarket cooler corsair h1000. all my fans are running. I don't think this is a new problem just one I have never noticed. I built the pc myslef and I'm pretty rookie with this stuff. I built it 3 years ago, im thinking I possibly need to clean and reapply the thermal paste?

You had this setup for 3 years? The Liquid cooling pump might be failing, or the thermal paste wasn't properly applied and when drying, it separated from the cooler.
Touch the cooling radiators, and if they're cold when the CPU is at 80C, the pump or the thermal paste's the problem.

they are def not to warm when the cpu is at those temps

yes Ive had this setup but there was never any issues it always ran perfect very rarely did I ever even have a system crash. My knowledge in pc's is clearly not too in depth but I love to game in my spare time and have always enjoyed putting things together so I took this on.

But the only reason i noticed this is when I went to overclock the cpu a few days ago and and it didnt crash but casued performace issues and I noticed then the temps were very high.

I would appreciate the help as I said I'm pretty novice on this

thanks

You should try reseating the cooler block. If the high temps still persist, go back to your stock cooler, check the temperature. If its lower than with the liquid cooler, get it repaired.

I no longer have my stock cooler, thanks for timely response.

This would be problematic. You won't have anything to compare the temps with and find out the problem. The best bet you have right now is to reinstall the cooler step by step after disassembling it, just as you would on a new build.

the radiators are cool for where they are. the tubes leading from the cooling unit to the radiators if it means anything, one is warmer then the other tube. I figured that was normal as hot air goes out and cold in

Yes, then it might be the thermal paste. Reapply it and reseat the cooler. If it doesn't work, im sure the cooler is faulty. Or maybe you overclocked/overvolted?

ok Ill do that, they could probaby use a good cleaning. but as a thermal paste issue being a culprit, how would I tell or should I address that if re installing the cooler doesn't work

as an overclock issue, Im really pretty sure the temps were this high before I ever attempted an overclocking.

Either the pump is broken or doesn't run proprely. A gap between the cooler and the CPU might also be the cause. Be sure the cooler is tight and sturdy on the CPU. It should not move with a slight nudge or push.

it has a slight free play in the cooler in a slight touch

It should not move unless you pull on it really hard.

I definitely did not pull hard. so im gonna take it apart and clean it, put it back on so its snug and doesnt move. I was probaly to cautious to tighten doing my first build. thanks buddy appreciate the help.

Would this cooling issue affect the fps?

Only if the temperature goes above the acceptable limit. Its only then that the CPU will throttle itself to prevent from destroying itself.

ok thanks again. Ill get back to the board in a few days, I have to travel for work and then Ill see what I can do and post a update.

ya becasue I just saw a thread where a guy did an overclock on the exact same cpu and at 100% usage it was at the temps mine were at when no usage at all.

There was a ton. I mean a lot if dust in between the fans in the radiator. It was fully covered with a very thick and nasty dust. That clearly wasn't helping. Also the cpus thermal paste looks dry and cracked and def doesn't fully cover the surface any longer. I'm going to go ahead and replace thay as well and see where we stand
