When I boot up my Windows 8.1 there is a long period where nothing is happening. I am staring at no new icons pop up and it seems like its actually stuck trying to load a specific program. I need to find a tool I can use to find out what program is taking the longest so I can get rid of it. Any suggestions?

Istari675,

The process you’re looking for is called a clean boot. It’s used to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This allows you to manually select each program that starts at startup to narrow down which one is causing the issue.

Hope this helps!

Tried that originally but it looks like the issue is being caused by multiple things because not a single program or service being disabled resolved the problem.

Istari675,

Assuming you hadn’t downloaded or installed anything which in turn caused your issue to start, it’s possible that your issue is being caused by corrupted system files. In this case, I recommend you run the System File Checker tool.

Start by running sfc /scannow from the command prompt. The tool will run and once it is finished, it will let you know if any issues were found.

Another option may be to restore your computer to an earlier point in time.
