My win 8.1 laptop can only see the 2.4 Ghz but cannot see the 5Ghz network on my Belkin N600 router although my older Win7 Laptop can see both. My new Win 8.1 laptop is an Acer E1-510, 8Gb RAM, 1TB HDD, 2.16 GHz twin core processor, about 6 months old.

Does you laptop have a dual-band wi-fi adapter?

I only want to connect to one network at a time. It has a Qualcom Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter and a Realtek PCie GBE Family controller.

If the wireless network adapter supports 5Ghz networks, you may need to go into Device Manager and change the type of networks that the adapter can connect to. If you look at the properties of the adapter, it may only be set to connect to 802.11a/g networks, in which case, 5Ghz probably wouldn't be visible as it didn't exist. If you set this to 802.11a/g/n, that may do the trick.

Thanks for that. The only setting I can see is "802.11b preamble" , but it doesn't seem to be changeable.

In that case, I'd say that the wireless network adapter isn't dual-band, meaning it will only connect to 2.4Ghz networks. The spec sheet on the Acer website doesn't state that the adapter is dual-band, so it's safe to assume that it isn't.
