I have a Hp Windows 7 Laptop that just died, but the hard drive is still working. I want to build a computer in a few weeks but do not want to buy a new copy of Windows as Windows 10 is coming out in a few months. Would it be possible to use the HD of the Hp Laptop as a boot drive temporary until Windows 10 comes out?

Solution
Anytime a new computer is built, a new copy of Windows must be installed. During the install process, certain settings are applied that are specific to the hardware in the computer, and cannot be easily changed.

That, plus the fact that taking a copy of Windows meant for another computer violates the terms of Windows licensing. OEM Windows (such as what is on your HP) is tied to the computer it came installed on, while retail Windows can be moved to a different computer, but only on one computer at a time.
