Technically yes.

As for which is better,

They perform pretty much the same.
The R9 285 uses less power.
The R9 280 has 1GB more VRAM, so it will scale better if you run higher than 1080p resolution.

No on the PSU. R9 280- 550 Watts, R9 285- 520 Watts

Maximum power consumption measured.

Typical peak power consumption.

The CX provides 456W on the 12v rail.

The FX 6300 uses peak power of around 130w.

So 130w + 250w = 380w...

He is perfectly fine with that PSU as long as he avoids overclocking.

I am just giving the Amd Recommendation. It does not hurt to have a little extra. With the power supplt you co not want to little.

I just gave what the Amd recommendation is. With power supplies having a little extra is not a bad thing.

Definitely not a bad thing :) , but there are major differences in PSUs, so AMD and Nvidia compensate for the super cheap junk version by upping their requirement.

So do you think this config would work on a cx430 ?

No it will not, there are about 3 versions of the CX430. 2 are horrible and 1 is decent, the CX430 V2.

But even the good CX 430 V2 version only provides 336W of usable power on the 12v rail.

The CX 500 V3, it provides 456w as I mentioned earlier.

If you are buying a new PSU, I usually tell people to not go for CX PSUs at all. A good alternative at around the same pricing is the EVGA 500B and EVGA 600B.

They are higher quality and should be similar in price to their CX500 and CX600 counterparts.

EVGA is not really available here... anyway how is cx500 v2 ? I am getting it at a very low price. Also, how do I identify which one is a v2 and v3 if the name is not mentioned.

You will need to check the serial sticker on the box or ask them specifically what the specs are.

The CX500 V2 provides 32Amps on 12W rail, so thats 384W. Which is not enough.

Try to never cheap out on a PSU, its your most important part, if you overstress it, it could fail badly and take half your system with it.

Can you get Seasonic, XFX or Antec at decent pricing?

The Antec VP DEFINITELY!

Worth the extra bit of cost.
