Would a higher clocked 970 perform better than a 980. For instance:
EVGA GeForce GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0

1216MHz Base Clock
1367MHz Boost Clock
126GT/s Texture Fill Rate
4096MB GDDR5 Memory
7010MHz Memory Clock
224.3GB/s Memory Bandwidth

vs

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 ACX 2.0

1126MHz Base Clock
1216MHz Boost Clock
144GT/s Texture Fill Rate
4096MB GDDR5 Memory
7010MHz Memory Clock
224.3GB/s Memory Bandwidth

I plan on gaming @ 1440p and need to upgrade. So when i came across those cards, I wanted to know if the memory specs on the 970 are better than the 980, what would be the point to get the 980? Please excuse my ignorance in the subject. Any information is appreciated.

Thank you,

The 980 will preform a decent amount better then the 970 due to it being a higher chip which means more cores, more ROPs,etc... Although if you are strapped for cash, I would definitely see the 970 being the better buy because of its better price to performance ratio.

You could buy 2 GTX970s for 80$ more than a GTX980.

There are definitely people that have matched the GTX970 to the GTX980 by overclocking on air, on water you can do a lot more.

But from the 2 you are comparing, the GTX980 is still better, not worth the cost though.

You cannot compare clocks between two different cards and have that be indicative of relative performance (unless they both have the same underlying GPU and memory system, which they dont).

If the price is the same, get the 980. Theres no reason to get a souped up lower end card when with the same cash you could just get the outright better card.
