Because most games to this day will only really utilize 2-3 cores heavily, so having a CPU with higher per-core efficiency ends up providing superior performance over one with more (but less efficient) cores. Intel has held the per-core performance crown since 2006, so this is why you see their low-midrange CPUs competing with AMD's mid-high-end lineup (as far as gaming is concerned).
