So I'm trying to upgrade my Windows 8 laptop to an SSD. When I clone the OS it gives me a BSOD on boot. If I clone the entire drive with HDclone, it also gives me a BSOD. If I just clone the windows partition then it's not bootable. Is there one solution that would work and that doesn't involve a repair disk ?

More about : clone windows ssd bsod boot

You need to give us a few more details - what laptop (ie specs), what SSD, how exactly you're going about cloning it etc

Cloning your system drive to an SSD and then switching them out is a fairly standard way of upgrading so it defo should be possible with your system

It's the Thinkpad e530, the ssd is the PNY Optima 240gb. And if Windows just crashes when I boot from the sata adapter I don't think it would work If I placed it in the laptop.

You need to place the SSD in the laptop in place of the original system HD that you've cloned. Did the clone complete ok?

The whole point of the disk cloning process is to trick Windows into thinking that no change has taken place - if you don't switch the old system HD for the SSD onto which you've cloned it, the illusion is incomplete and that will likely be the cause of your BSOD

Take courage and make the switch!!!
