To begin, this is the build I am working with, http://pcpartpicker.com/user/luckynumber56/saved/2tGbt6

I have all of the parts except for the motherboard which I just returned as defected.

So, my question is regarding options of a new motherboard for this build, as well as potential help for the issue I have with the board before (I was not %120 sure it was defected, my thought is that it is potentially incompatible, which I'll get into).
When I installed the parts and pins and went to hit the power button -- nothing happened. The single thing that showed sign of power even going through the socket was the motherboard light, besides that nothing ran. I have tested the PSU and it runs properly. I have also tried flashing the CMOS, trying each stick of RAM, and trying without the GPU; still nothing. Here is where I was confused, on the board there was the socket for EATX 12V which has pin shapes (8) different than the 4+4 pin coming from the PSU. When I contacted ASUS support later and told them about this, the representative told me that it was likely not the issue and that it should work regardless of shape as long as it fits.
Bad photos, but these are what it looks like.
What the connector should look like to fit the socket shape: http://i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/1934459716/Mainborad...

It should be the 4pin + 4pin one ( 2nd image), the PSU (TPD-0550M) comes with one that label with "cpu", like in the link http://www.thermaltake.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_000... If you don't plug it into the MB the PC will not boot because the cpu need it to power up. And don't confuse with the pic-e connector, the psu comes with 2 that has 6pin + 2pin and one end is red color.

Yes, I had tried this (And almost did mistake the PCI-E connector). Unfortunately the same occurred, I suppose this is further indication that it was likely defective. Though it would seem like bad news that is good to hear because I would not have wanted to return something that was fixable then and there. Do you have any thoughts on a different motherboard for this build?
I appreciate the reply.

Because asus is good brand, you maybe get the bad one unfortunately. ASRock Z77 Extreme3 is other one you may take a look at. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
