GPU Digital Sound versus independent Sound Card

OK pretty simple question here. I have a rig (3770k, SLI GTX 780's, 16GB RAM) that is use for basically everything; media server, internet browsing, Office Pro, gaming, etc. Currently I am using two monitors, one of which is a Samsung SyncMaster T260HD which is a 26" 1920x1200p resolution, 60Hz display and another, more basic, Dell monitor at a lower 1280x1024 resolution, which is used as a secondary display to view more things easier (highly recommend two screens btw).
My question is this; I currently have audio coming from the GPU, a pair of MSI Gaming GTX 780's with 3GB of VRAM. This is connected to my main monitor (Samsung) by a single HDMI and this is how audio is currently transmitted. My question is would there be any sound quality improvement to adding a dedicated sound card to my rig and if so how can this improve the sound quality going through my monitor? I also sometimes plug my headphones into my monitor while gaming and I am wondering if there would be any benefit to plugging them into a sound card rather than into the monitor. I am also considering getting either a 2.1 or 5.1 speaker configuration to improve the audio for my gaming and home office environment and wonder if a sound card would improve that setup. I don't need a 7.1 sound card and would only likely go 2.1 for the speakers unless a decent 5.1 system is found for cheap. So would a sound card improve sound for a 2.1 or headphones setup, and would it improve sound on my monitor at all? Thanks for your time.

If you have your audio coming from your monitors integrated speakers, literally anything else is an improvement, and I wouldnt buy a sound card to feed it "better" audio because it will just be wasted on those speakers.

Basically, the only reason to buy a cheap sound card is for a headphone amp as there wont be any real improvement in audio quality (plenty more options though). If the volume you can get though your integrated mobo sound is sufficient, no reason to get a dedicated card.
If you want to sink some cash into your audio setup, getting headphones or a speaker setup is the place to start, you already have a sound card on the mobo, and terrible speakers will always trump a good DAC (sound card), but not the other way around.
