If you can get another 680 for cheap then SLI might be my option of choice as the 680 is still a stronger card , a good alternative is the GTX 970 with the 680 as a dedicated physX card.

Honestly, matters how much you can get a GTX 680 for. If you can get it for say under 200, its probably a better buy. But according to the benchmarks the GTX 970 and 980 are either twice or just a little less as good.

I would see if you can sell your 680 for a good price and get a 970. would be the best option in terms of performance to price I bet.

but of course with the same vram. if i sli and get one with a slightly lower base clock, its goin to offset the other to the same clock speed?

yes actually, with dual 680's whichever one is faster will decrease its clock to that of the slower card. But that wont change much, I have two slightly different clocked 770's 2gb in sli and they work wonders. :)  Good luck.
