Hi folks. I'm new here. I'm wondering if some of you hardware guru's could help me out. I know of a used computer that used to be used for gaming, and I don't do gaming, but I need a desktop for computer development / Windows database stuff. This computer needs to be medium fast in that I need to make sure it's not so fast that most people won't have such a computer and then my program ends up being slow from writing on a fast machine, but I need it to be fast enough that I don't have to wait on it all day either.. :-)

Here are the specs. I see it only has 2gb of Ram and I'm wondering also if that's up gradable? I realize it's according to the board, but I thought maybe you could take a guess based on experience.

It also has a SSD which I'll use for the OS of course and maybe add another is my thinking along with some more RAM and then the only thing I'd be worried about is the cheap? I just want to make sure it's as fast as say a celeron Intel, and hopefully about as a fast as say an I3 Intel chip at around 2.ghz clock speed, etc,. I am not a hardware guru at all, but have a good basic understanding of course.

Specs:
Amd athlon xII 3.1ghz processor.
2gb ddr3 ram
Nvidia 9500gt Graphics card 1gb ddr2 dedicated graphics
2 - 500gb hard drives, one of them is a 2.5'' Hybrid ssd drive.
2 Dvd burner drives
internal wifi card

A modern celeron will beat that older x2 cpu.

How much are you geting the PC for, and what motherboard is in it?

Hi,
Thank you for answering. I don't know what mother board is in it, it's supposed to be an older gaming machine. I think it's an HP or something. He wants like 200 bucks for it .. Just the computer without monitor, etc, but that's all I need.

Again, thank you so much. I had no idea the Celeron would, or could be faster. I'm shocked. I thought all of them were pretty slow from my experience with them at work (I work part time at a pawn shop and I am always tasked with formatting or restoring to original factory condition if possible.) The celeron's seem to be SOOO Slow.. hehe

Of course a modern day Celeron will beat a 4 year old cpu. That being said that Athlon II is still a good everyday computer. You really need to double that ram at least. I would try and get him down to say $150. Tell him it won't be usable with two gigs of ram.

The X2 is a 4-5 year old cpu. A 4-5 year old celeron would be slower, but a modern celeron would be better. Back then there was a good difference between pentium and celeron. Nowdays the difference is much smaller.
