Good evening all,

Build a new computer a few months ago - having quite an issue and havent been able to fix it as of yet.

Setup;
Windows 8.1 Pro
Asus Sabertooth Motherboard
8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM (2400Mhz)
Sapphire AMD 280x 3GB
Samsung Evo 250GB SSD
Western Digital 7200rpm 1TB Drive.
AMD FX 8350 4Ghz

Long story short;

Whenever the computer would go into 'sleep/hibernation' it would completely freak out, giving the very bleak error message of "Theres something wrong, insert recovery media"
This was every time.

I barely got a chance to use it regularly, so didnt worry too much, till last week.
I had changed all the power settings so they never went into sleep mode etc.

I installed a few games, Lotro and Hearthstone onto my 1TB drive, and left WoW updating and left my computer for 30 minutes, came back, damn to the world, Its gone into sleep mode.

Not a problem, ill just run the recovery disk again I thought, very wrongly apparently.

It wouldnt repair the OS, which was strange, I really struggled to get it to boot into it to the CD at all, I just got a black screen (Yay)
I decided it was best to go to bed and try again after work the next day.

So, when I tried to run the disk the next night, I got a very night Windows Icon (Just before loading into the OS Setup)
Nothing else, all night. Not a bean.

So I took the SSD out (This originally had the OS on) and took it to work as I have a lot more tools in my office for things like this(Im an IT Tech)
Got it plugged into my work computer using USB leads and straight away it wanted to repair the bad sectors, left that running for 2 hours and it finished successfully, woo, I could see everything that was on the SSD. Perfect, couldnt wait to get home that night.

Got home, plugged everything back in, pressed the power button in anticipation.
Still nothing OS wise, Damn.
Popped the disk in, It goes through the normal motions as expected to install, I fully reformat the SSD and start the OS install, got to 37%...failed.
Giving an error message (For the first time) of; 0x80070017 which is the CRC error, so I thought maybe the DVD drive or disk, to elliminate the drive I plugged my external drive in, went to exactly the same point, and poof. Error again, ok so its the disk then!
Got another disk and away I went, got to 100%! Brilliant,
Computer restarted and I started getting a bit excited.
It started up, was setting itself up, bam. Error has occurred and need to restart (irql_not_less_or_equal)
Then it just goes into a restart loop.

Anyway, im in a bit of a pickle at this point,
I havent bothered trying to install to my 1TB drive as I cant reformat it as it has a lot of data that I havent had a chance to get off.

Starting to think its the SSD.....

Any suggestions would massively help!

More about : unable reinstall corruption

Hi,

I`ve had and seen a similar problem with the data being corrupted every time i would boot up and power down my pc, it was back on xp so did not have the option to put to sleep. The problem was not with the hdd but the motherboard so I would try your ssd on another pc if possible. Every time I would power up and then down the info going through the mobo would be corrupted a little more and when i would leave it on all night I would be met with a BSOD, When I would look up the log of services there would be loads of them which would be showing up as error or warning and after the mobo was replaced the only 1 that would show as problem. I just had a look at mine and I think you need to look at windows log and as I can see on mine there is only one entry that is showing a problem but when the motherboard was bad it was like 80% showing signs of problems. my win xp install would last about 3 days before I had to reinstall window. hope this helps!

Thats actually really helpful thank you!
My first feeling was motherboard, so I instantly logged a call with Asus, however 6 days on im no further forward as there customer support is absolutely dreadful and take 2-5 days each response.

I can access the motherboard and view all items, so I have been second guessing myself.

Hi again,

I had a bit of time to think and it would be a good idea to test as much of the pc on a working platform if you have access to another pc,if the ram has a corruption then every time data is in the ram it would store a corrupted version and then that would store corrupt data to the hdd, You can test ram with memtest, I`m not sure if that would sohow up a mobo fault as I don`t know how memtest works i.e. is it just moving data through the ram or is it moving data from cpu to ram via the mobo

You can use memtest to test the mobo, ram and all cores of the cpu. It`s been a long time since i used it but casting my mind back it allows you to test each core of the cpu so try that first and if it shows up anything you will be able to see, if it only does it on 1 core or if it a certain address in the ram but you will be able to rule hardwhere in or out. theres no need to buy memtest hte free version should work just fine.

Thanks for your response again Beefy, I will start a memtest later on tonight!

Evening,

I used memtest expecting something back, however no reports of any faults whatsoever, starting to look towards the motherboard!
Any suggestions?

Hi,

If memtest showed no problems you can rule Ram,CPU and mobo out,as long as you allowed memetest to run on all cores of the cpu. The ram that you are using is it really 2400mhz? as you would not really see any benefit as the fx8350 only has a 1866mhz fsb unless you are overclocking it ,is the memory running at 2400mhz check in the bios and use cpu-z to check in windows he you can. If that all looks fine then the only thing I can think it would be is win disc damaged, dvd drive or mobo sata controller. I`m running a m5a99x r2.0 with the same cpu as you and I know that there was drivers on the asus site for the mobo and there was 1 for the AHCI Driver which is for ssd. When you first loaded windows was it working right or did it get worse over time? I`ve been thinking about getting a samsung ssd for mine but I`ll think I`ll hold off for now.

Im using the RAM on a lower clock to match the CPU.
Tried a few disks, so dont think its going to be the disks.
The drive worked fine (When the PC was working) and never encountered any issues.
When I first loaded it, it was working 'without' issue, apart from when it went into sleep mode - so maybe theres a driver I can find! Ill see if I can find one tonight for the SSD.

hi,

Also so have a look on windows update as some updates are hardware optional, mine kept freezing so i did the optional updates and that cured it. If you get it going again is there any chance you can turn of sleep and hibernation mode? there seems to be a know problem with win 7 and sleep/hib and they suggest deleting the hibernation file but thats not an option for win 8 due to the files it save there.

Also is your mobo set to AHCI mode?

often bugs in the sleep functions are resolve via A BIOS update. Windows error reporting can detect your problem and tell windows update to install special drivers to "fix" it (block the functionality.) The windows update just can not update your BIOS for you or apply the updated chipset drivers that have CPU microcode fixes for various cpu problems or give you the custom OEM chipset drivers you need for your SATA controller.

The motherboard is set to UEFI.
Ive ran all the updates that I can, unfortunately I cant get into an Operating System so cant run any Windows update.

you will have to boot into safe mode or a repair image or a new windows image and issue the various repair command.
disable fast boot. and make sure it is booting up from a cold start (no power) get into BIOS and reset the BIOS to defaults and reconfigure.

are you running any special OEM software like Samsung Magician ?
error 800700017
is a fatal error from the win32 subsystem with a (NTSTATUS) 0x17 - Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

any software installed on the device during CRC error will be suspect and you should assume it is corrupted.
so
you need to boot on a working image/ machine and
target the image and run the system file checker
sfc.exe /scannow
if that fails you have to use the dism.exe command
dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

this will at least have a chance to repair your core OS files. You still will have various other corruptions that It will not repair.
Most people are better served by with a drive wipe and firmware upgrade to the SSD. Then before they reinstall the OS, boot into your BIOS and leave the SSD drive idle to allow the SSD time to run its firmware, to clean up all the deleted files via its internal GC routines. Also, if you put the OS on using a imaging program, dont' do that. Some of the older versions cause problems with the TRIM functions the OS calls.

Hi,

Also theres a firmware update for your ssd, don`t know if this will sort out your problems but can`t hurt.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/samsung-840-evo-ssd-patch...

AHCI should be found on your mobo under sata1-4,you`ll have the options for ide-raid-ahci and it`s my understanding that for a ssd you select ahci and then load the drivers when you install windows.
