I started encoding a video from a DVD (Video_ts folder) to mp4 via Handbrake. I'm doing this on an Intel Core i7 4790k with a stock cooler and the temperatures started rising up to 103°C. The process time is estimated to last 25 mins. I ordered a Noctua cooler online but I didn't get it yet and I need to finish this project by tomorrow. I stopped it 5 mins. in because it freaked me out, is it safe running this process at 100°C+ for 25 mins.? Will I damage my processor? Thanks

For that processor, I believe you are at the far end of the temp range. It's not good by any means, you really need to do something. I wouldn't do that any more.

The temperatures are not very safe at all. Is the processor overclocked? I suggest re-seating the heat sink and apply new thermal compound if you can.

If you got a big fan laying around something, you could open your side panel and have the big fan blow air into there focused on the CPU. I once did this when I had no thermal compound on a FX-4100 so I could do basic stuff.

I was thinking that the stock heatsink wouldn't be enough for that processor.

Thought the same thing, but this sounds like a horror show. I know this is not safe but can it cause permanent damage to the processor? Really don't want to **** up a 350$ processor for a stupid video file...

If you check your CPU temps at the same time and they are lower, you should be fine. Although this is definitely not optimal, try cleaning out your case in case of dust for a little more airflow.

95-100c is way too high, especially for extended periods.

The stock heatsink may not be mounted well. But honestly, I would toss it and get something like a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

This was legendary, had cold water in the yellow tray and a fan blowing cold air to the main fan that blew cold air to the CPU fan. Pissed myself but made it, waiting on that Noctua next time...

Haha, gimmicky setup you got there, just make sure you don't spill anything because if you do say goodbye to your PC :p

edit: In fact it may not be the best idea, hot air and cold air would possibly cause condensation. Watch it through the whole 25minutes of your video project rendering.

Render was over in 10 mins. wrong estimation from handbrake...
Def no condensation but it was VERY RISKY, had another small fan on the motherboard backplate which I think helped a lot.
Remind me not to bring any kind of liquid closer than 5m around my motherboard EVER.

Well you got through and now you just gotta sit tight for that Noctua ;)
