So I'm building a gaming rig and I'm looking to stay close to $500- $600 and I'd like to know what processor I should get!
I'd like to spend approximately $100-$150 on a CPU and i've narrowed it down to two possible winners!
We have the AMD FX-6300 3.5 6-CORE and the AMD ATHLON X4 760K 3.8 QUAD-CORE

Of these two, which one do you guys think I should get? Or do you guys have any suggestions on a different processor I should get instead of the two listed? Thanks!!

Out of these two I would go with the 6300, hands down.

Of those the AMD FX-6300 without a doubt.

Yeah that's what I was thinking as well. With the 6 cores I would expect to see more power output than with the 3.8ghz quad core. But is there any other CPU within this price range that is better than the 6300?

Get the i3 4330 then upgrade to the i5 4690k or i7 4790k when you need it. Trust me, i bought the FX 6300 2 years ago over the i3 3220 and regret it a few months down the road. Recently switch from the FX 6300 to the i5 4690k and i most say even tho i'm still using my HD 7870, BF4 is much smoother since i don't like FPS below 60 which even on low settings the FX 6300 @ 4.5ghz struggles to do.

So, from a gaming standpoint, i3-4330 vs. the fx-6300, the intel wins?

In anything single threaded, yes.

I would go with the i3. Get a good motherboard (Z97 preferably) so you can upgrade to an i5 or i7 later. Or, just spend $190 on an i5 4440 now.

I'm kind of banking on cyber monday to give me sweet deals so I might actually go with the i5 4440 if you think that's the best gaming CPU around my price range!

It depends on the games you play, the programs you use, and how many cores they can use.

For games capable of using up to 4 cores, you will get a few more FPS out of an Intel CPU thanks to their superior single core performance. In games able to use 5-6 or more, an AMD CPU closes the gap with the FX 8350 running between the i5 and i7.

So it is important to take a look at the kind of games you like to play and know how the software will work with the CPU. It is also worth noting, all FX CPUs are unlocked and overclock well with good cooling.

I play a mix of games along with capturing and video compression. So an FX 8350 is what I chose.

For just gaming, an i5 4440 is a great pick, especially if you find a good sale.

The 4460. It is slightly faster than the 4440, but for the price the 4440 wins. It is about $15 cheaper.

The Intel i3 processors typically outframe any AMD cpus in most games (assuming equal discrete GPUs, however), even with the latter clocked 1 GHz higher, and with twice the core count...
