Hey guys.
I recently purchased a GTX 980 to replace my trusty old GTX 460 SE that had served me for several years. Anyway, my hard drive had worked fine for years without any problems. But after I switched out my old graphics card for my new one, my hard drive started intermittently 'beeping' or buzzing after I turned on my computer. I would get the error message: "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key_".

Eventually I opened my hard drive and found that the motor was stuck and the buzzing was the motor trying to move. I gave the centre of the plates a gentle push, and the issue was fixed. My hard drive would now spin up as usual as I started my computer, making the exact same noise as it used to do when it worked.

The only problem is that the hard drive still does not show up in the BIOS and I can therefore not boot up my computer. My CD drive still shows up and I have swapped SATA cables with my CD drive and hard drive and the CD drive shows up in different SATA slots on both occasions in the BIOS, so it is not the cables that are faulty.

I have tried taking out the new graphics card and replacing it with the old one, and even tried booting without a GPU at all. This does not seem to affect anything. I have also tried booting off a windows installation disc to attempt reinstalling windows, but although the disc drive does show up in the BIOS, the computer refuses to boot from a disc. I have tried this with a number of different bootable discs.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated as I have just received this new graphics card in the post and am desperate to use my computer again. Thanks!

Specs that I know of off the top of my head:
ASUS P7H55-M SI Motherboard
Intel i3 CPU 550 @ 3.20 GHz Processor
16312MB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 GPU (Previously GTX 460 SE)
450W PSU (don't know much about this one)

me thinks the hard drive died.. random noises are almost NEVER good with them...

While it does sound a lot like the hard drive, I have to wonder if the issue is ultimately caused by lack of enough power. I mean 450W imo is not enough for a high end gpu. ( I have seen a gpu upgrade cause all kinds of random issues. Mind you I am not ruling out a bad hard drive, I would see if i could test a good branded 650-700W power supply as well.

Although this is definitely possible, I think it is less likely considering the hard drive still doesn't work even with the old graphics card or even no gpu at all.

I see your point. though the psu could still have caused the issue. PSU could not handle power draw and it spiked the HD is still a possibility. this would still render the hard drive inoperable in another machine. and replacing the hd alone will not fix the underlying problem. more like patch the symptoms of course this is my opinion. :D
