What is wrong with my computer?
Every once in a while (one a day for every few days) my computer turns suddenly turns off and I need to replug the power cord back into my computer to be able to turn it on. Once it is turned on it does not get past the screen where windows is loading and the colorful animation does not appear. In order to get back onto windows I need to put in a recovery disk everytime and system restore to be able to use my computer again.

I think this problem may have started after there were some power outages here and I do not have a surge protector.

Did you really hope a power outage (ie AC voltage droping well below that voltage) would be averted by a protector that ignores any voltage less than 330 or 500 volts (those numbers on the protector's box)?

To obtain a useful answer immediately (in a next reply) requires numbers by requesting instructions, a digital meter, and a full minute of labor. Otherwise, every reply can only be wild speculation from a long list of suspects.
