What would be a good monitor for heavy gaming? I was thinking maybe either a 1080p or 1440p monitor.
I hear ips is the best looking.
I have a gtx 770, so I don't think I'd be able to power games at ultra on 1440p.
I do play some fps games, but not competitively, so I guess I'd be fine with a 5ms response time.
What would be good?

When Picking a monitor, 3 things should be taken into Account , 1:Technology behind display, 2:Response time and 3:screen size and resolution,
1: IPS will give you great viewing angles , beautiful whites and vibrant colors, So its good for watching movies especially with friends and family , and also good fit editing and other media purposes.
TN will give you generally deeper Black's , better response time , slightly better gaming performance and only draw back is limited viewing angles,
In your case I'll recommend IPS as you are not playing very high end AAA titles,
2: go with a 5ms response time monitor and I don't think you'll notice the difference if you go lower than that.
3: 23" inches and full HD 1080p is the norm now a Days , But if you want you can go with a 1440p and 27" inches for a somewhat future proof Monitor,
Asus , dell or Acer are best sellers , Doesn't makes much difference in matter of customer care services as all are ok ,
forget to mention if your buying online , it's a recommended thing to go to a shop near you and observe IPS and TN display yourself, and buy the one that pleases your eyes :)

Good luck and buy Best :)

You haven't told about budget, region , so I can't recommend a specific monitor, also with your nvidia card you can use vsync with a compatible monitor, (makes frames better in some games but can worse too) . 144 hz refresh rate monitors are also famous and slightly better than 60 hz ,
