So I am planning to upgrade my rig a bit. I am getting a new mobo with an i7 4790k. I have been trying to find the best cooler for this cpu. I have looked around but I know there are still plenty of options. I have considered the Corsair H105 and the Cooler Master Nepton 280L. Although I do not plan on overclocking, I want a cooler that would keep the CPU cool at base clock and if I ever want to oc, it would be possible.

More about : cooler 4790k

Is your heat set on liquid cooling? There are plenty of air coolers that perform as well or better than all but the best liquid coolers. Kinda depends on your case though. If it's not wide enough, some of the taller tower coolers won't fit and since the best performers are almost all 159-160mm the case needs to be capable of a cooler that tall.

I personally recommend the Noctua air coolers. They outperform and are quieter than just about any other option, including water cooling. You have to consider that liquid coolers not only also have a fan for the radiator, but that they generally run the fan faster than most air configurations and also have at least some amount of pump noise as well.

I use the H100i and have never had a problem with it or with the H100 before. I have the 4790k and it keeps it at idle around 22 to 25 degrees and never goes over 55 degrees unless I stress test with P95 and then it tops out in the 70's. In terms of sound, the H100i does a good job of keeping things quiet and only gets a bit louder when the temps sky rocket.

Hmm. I have never really considered an air cooler. I will look into them. Included with the upgrade listed I am getting a Corsair 750D. Would that work with the ones you mentioned?

Awesome! Thank you for the info. I was considering the Hydro series.

Yes, it will. That case supports up to 170mm coolers and few coolers are that tall.

I'd recommend the Noctua NH-D14, NH-D15 and NH-U14S.

Great! Thank you so much for your help!

EDIT: I actually have one more question. I began to look at the Noctua air coolers and came a cross the Phanteks PH-TC14-PE. Would you think this could be a competitor?

It is a competitor, and a very good cooler. But the Noctuas are better in my opinion. The numbers say they perform better and are quieter. I've been pleased with every Noctua so far. I've not owned a Phanteks but reviews are consistently good. They're just a degree or three warmer and a few decibels louder. Possibly they might have a bigger footprint as well. Another good cooler is the Cryorig R1 Ultimate. I'd still pick the Noctual NH-D14 or D15 over any of those though.

As Darkbreeze says, if you are going air cooling - Noctuas are the best and more than compete with AIO coolers like the H100i - be aware though, it is giga humungus (huge)...
