Hello, I have a HP Pavilion desktop computer with 2.6Ghz AM2/AM2+ dual core, with four 1gb = 4gb of ddr2-6300/5400 ram, 320GB 7200rpm 3gb/s sata2 hard drive. I was just wondering if I could install two 2gb ram sticks and leave the other 2 slots with 1gb a piece, leaving me with 6gb of ram. I was wondering if I need to keep it all the same speed (6300 or 5400) as well as keep the ecc and brand all the same. Also what aspects of computing would upgrading my ram helpful in. I basically have multiple windows/tabs for internet, youtube, email, perhaps word and World of Tanks. I have 64 bit Vista, which I plan to upgrade next year to the new MS o/s 64 bit. I basically want to get more ram in their for any future programs or games that might need more ram.

I not recommend spend money on DDR2. we have the ddr4 now on the market. and 4gb for yours tasks is good. you can spend money on A SSD will be a life saver great than amount of RAM.

And you can use this SSD on your next build

Thanks for the reply. I went to look at the motherboards that support ddr4 ram, very expensive all the way around.
DDR3 can be done MB at $100, cpu at $100 and the ram is very reasonable. Might be doable in my HP ATX case in the future. Good point on the ram upgrade, would have spent $100-$150 on upgrading my ram. But if I upgrade mb, cpu then I would have the SATA3 for the ssd.

Don't go for DDR2 and DDR4. There are no desktop CPUs which are supporting DDR4 right now. Skylake from Intel is expected to support DDR4 not even Broadwell. CPUs in haswell-e 2011-3 sockets are for X99 series chipsets.

You can check DDR3 but for that you would need to change the mobo and possibly CPU as well. This all depends upon your budget.

Thanks
Ya, its unlikely I am going to go that in depth on upgrading my system for what I do on it. Interesting to look at the prices.
Maybe when the ram gets cheaper, I will just stuff my current motherboard full of ddr2 ram.
Guess I should just stick to whatever I install in my current setup, everything should be the same. The same speed, ecc, brand. If it dont work, mixing the size of the ram then I will be left with what I had originally, 4gb. Less the cash!

It is not advisable to use different RAMs (based on timings particularly) together as they may give you incompatibility issues. Better buy same RAM as you have in the system to be sure.
