How much power does my GPU really need?

So I was looking in my wardrobe and found my GPU box, it says that the GPU requires 600 Watt but I only have a 550 watt PSU and that powers everything, I have been using this card for a few weeks now and there is no problems, I even ran some GPU strain test and got it to 100% usage and still 100% power! So does my GPU really need 600 Watt?

Just wondering!?

Solution
600W is the complete system suggestion by the manufacturer, in truth you rarely need that much wattage, but they set the bar high because there are so many VERY bad PSUs out there that do not provide anywhere NEAR their rated wattage.

If you can give your full system specs, it will be easy to estimate ACTUAL system consumption.

that 550 would be just fine.
