Ok. I am sure this question has been asked numerous times and before making this thread I tried to do my own research and found opposing opinions and advice, nothing was too clear. So please tom's hardware gurus, lend me your ear.

I am looking to upgrade my gpu setup. I currently run 660ti's in SLI. While this is fine for the most part, the low vram (2gb) and the sometimes folly of SLI (recently bought shadow of mordor and there was no SLI support for it) has made me decide it's time for one powerful card that is a noticeable, substantial upgrade. So I have my sights set in either a 970 or 980. While money is not really an issue, it seems the 980 can be on average 200 bucks more than the 970. So if I am not going to get 200 bucks extra performance out of the 980, I'd rather be smart with my money. I will be gaming on a 1080p monitor, not one with 4k resolution if that makes a difference.

On a side note, if anyone could tell me if my current hardware would be a bottleneck for either the 970 or 980 I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

GTX 970 is looking good for performance and value. That's what I would go with.

I don't doubt the performance or value of the 970. The only thing I am concerned with is it's performance relative to my 660ti SLI setup. If it's on par or only a little better I'd rather go with the 980. Though if it's a substantially better I'd have no problem getting a 970.

I thought you said the SLI was not working. If you are getting acceptible performance then there is no reason to upgrade.

What I meant was a disadvantage of having a SLI setup is that when a new game comes out there is not always support for it right away, which kind of negates having SLI unless you want to wait however long Nvidia takes to add support for the game. I will be upgrading no matter what to a 970 or 980, but I just want to know how much of an upgrade I much expect from each over my current setup, and if the extra price for the 980 is really worth it over the 970 for 1080p gaming.
