The HD series cards are AMD's older cards. They switched to branding their cards R7 and R9 a while ago.

Some R9 are newer architecture such as the R9 290, R9 290X, R9 285, R9 260X. There are the only "newer" cards, the others are rebrand of the HD 7000 series.
If you want a graphic card, what is your budget? What resolution are you running at? WHat are you using your gpu for, gaming or/and editing?

Do you want an AMD card no matter what or are you open to Nvidia suggestions?

If you are, the best value high-end card within your budget right now is the GTX 970. It's a wonderful card and you'll have some money left over too.

Fair enough.

In that case you can just get a R9 290X, it's AMD's flagship card and their best performer short of the $1500 R9 295X2. Just make sure you have a good PSU to go along with it.

GTX 900 series is currently the latest release of Nvidia gpu which should support the upcoming games. There is a chance that 4GB vram is becoming a standard for ultra 1080p gaming soon. GTX 970 is a good choice.
AMD has the R9 300 series coming soon next year. R9 290 is the other alternative but is pretty power hungry.
