Hi all, I was thinking of adding a projector to my home theatre setup.

Trouble is I know a great deal about computers and hardware but nothing about projectors.

What I want to know is:
-What components will I need to make this system work
-What are the average costs of creating a system like this
-What brands would you recommend
-What flaws or pitfalls do you guys know of ?

Thanks for all of your help! :D

1) Assuming you are using a newer projector then all you should need is a video card that can handle HDMI out. And a cable long enough to reach the projector. Older models might use Svideo which is nearly impossible to find these days on a video card. They should also support VGA, which is doable.

2) Depends on the projector you pick. 1080P models are usually around $800, though I'm starting to see them hit the $650 mark every now and then. 720 models are no where near as expensive. $200-$300 is what you can expect to pay for those.

4) Bulb life, huge size, and the screen are the usual issues. The bulbs will burn out and require a replacement. They tend to not be cheap. I've heard as little as $50, though they can be $200+. You'll also need the room for that huge screen. If you have a smaller place, you might have problems setting up the proper viewing distance. You'll also need something white to project onto. Not cream, not egg shell, not off white, but white. The more non white you project onto, the more your colors will be off. So if you don't have a good color wall to use, you'll need to either paint it or get a screen and stand.

Thank you for the reply!
I have the necessary GPUs from my PC ( 2 x GTX970) so that's not a problem.

You have been extremely helpful and I have no further questions :)
Cheers mate.

Those should do it. I would get a 1080P minimum. I'm not sure if they make any 1440 or higher models. If they do, I'm sure they are $1k+. I'm going to leave this open for awhile as I didn't comment on #3 at all, and there might be more input on the other 3.
