I have a WD mybook 500 gb. The usb plug-in slot broke, so i took the drive out of enclosure. I bought a new enclosure, but my hard drive wont show up. Under disk management, drive shows up unallocated. I have alot of important data on drive that i need. I was told my a tech that the hard drive is not damaged. Another note, the hard drive was bought as a 500gb, but when taken out of the casing, it has 640gb written on it. How do i recover this data?

Sorry, sounds like that. What i mean is, the hd supposed to be 500gb, but when taken out of casing, the sticker on hd states that the hd is 640gb

You could try minitool partition wizard. Select partition recovery wizard and then hit apply.

Yes it is free. I have only used it for that reason but it also has a data recovery option. The trick is to choose what you want and then hit apply. Be careful in there! You could do more damage if you are not paying attention. Good luck!

Sounds good. Got my fingers crossed. Is this a problem that happens alot? I've read numerous threads, all with WD hard drives & some issue with the way the hd is bridged.

Is the My Book an Essentials model? If so, then it will be encrypted, and you will require the USB-SATA brideg PCB to decrypt it.

If you examine sector 0 with a disc editor (ed DMDE freeware), this will tell us whether it is encrypted. Select Mode -> Hexadecimal.
