when installing xp on my dell laptop says there is no disk in this drive. so how to solve this?

Is the hard drive detected in BIOS (F2) when booting up?
Run the diagnostics on the machine. As soon as you turn on the machine, keep tapping F12 key until the one time boot menu comes up, then select the diagnostic option.
Make sure RAID on is not selected in BIOS under SATA operation, needs to be ATA.
