New GPU/PSU POSTing issues

Hi everyone,

New to this forum but I've always turned to you for my answers. However this time I'm stumped. I'm more of a networking guy then software/hardware so if I sound like a newbie it's because I am.

First, my system:

CPU: AMD FX-4130 quad core
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB 3 FA
BIOS: Award Software International FA 04/23/2013
PSU: Corsair 750M
GPU: AMD R9 270x
RAM: stock 8 GB DDR3
OS: Windows 8.1 64 bit

This is a Cybertron PC (low budget entry level gaming PC from Tigerdirect) that I bought a year ago and decided it was time to upgrade the GPU. Having not done GPUs in a LONG time, I simply installed the drivers, plugged it in, connected the PCI-E power adapters and started it up. It actually worked for about 15 minutes or so and then shut down and wouldn't POST when restarting. I finally figured out that my power supply was only 450 W (again, noob who's learning as I go) so I bought a new PSU (Corsair 750M) to accommodate the extra power usage.

I connected the new PSU to everything, fired the PC back up and it worked... for about 45 minutes and then the same thing happened - a black screen when trying to POST. There is no "beep" and nothing displays on the monitor. I removed the GPU using the onboard card and it booted right up. I put the GPU back in and went to go get dinner for about 30 minutes. When I came back I turned the PC back on and boom - it started working perfectly.

Another 30 minutes or so passes (playing Total War Rome 2) and it shuts down on me again - the same exact issue.

I checked my BIOS and it's up to date. I updated the GPU drivers. I checked all power connectors and tried swapping out the extra PCI-E cable. By this time I was getting tired and frustrated and despite my best attempts, it would not POST with the new GPU plugged in. I went to bed frustrated and confused.

When I woke up this morning, I fired the PC back up (with the new GPU) and boom - it worked without issue. I had to go to work so I couldn't extensively test it, but I did leave it on for 45 or so minutes while I was getting ready and it didn't encounter an issue.

I checked the temps and the everything was well below 50 C... I'm at a loss of what to do. I don't have another PC to plug the GPU into to test. Is there something on my BIOS I should change (it does boot to PCI first)? Is it possible it's the PSU?

EDIT: I did go through the "Try this first for POSTing issues sticky thread" but haven't found my answer.

Thanks,
Josh

Hi everyone,

I did some research on the BIOS and I was hoping someone could answer something for me. I went to this link from the No Post sticky thread: http://www.maximumpc.com/print/6543 which is a BIOS guide. They point out that on the Init Display setting there are a couple of selections - by default PCI was selected which I thought was correct however now I see that PEG (which was an option on my bios) means PCI-E Graphics. Would this explain the issue?

But if that's the case, why would my old GPU, an AMD HD 66XX run okay on PCI but not the R9?

P.S. I haven't tried it yet, I've been wasting valuable work time researching this issue...

Regards,
Josh
