Are some distros more compatible with running games than others? I was hoping to use an Ubuntu derivative but it doesn't absolutely have to be. I would also prefer to run games through Steam using Wine. I would like to use one of the following:

-Ubuntu 14.04
-Ubuntu Gnome 14.04
-Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon

I know a lot of people use Arch Linux. Is it any better with more support for what I would like to do?

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I totally just hit the Solved button by accident (I hate touch screens sometimes).

I should have mentioned that I'm not a big gamer, just casual. I could be wrong but SteamOS looks pretty locked. I want a full operating system where I can download other software and what not.

No worries, last time I tried WINE was with Ubuntu 9 or something like that. Never really caught on with me, but I'm sure it has matured a lot since then.

ArchLinux is not people new to linux. It requires somewhat in depth knowledge of the inner workings of your system.

If you want things to just work, stick to Ubuntu. Check the WINE AppDB to see what games are compatible with wine. Not all Games will run well with WINE!

I run native linux CS:GO, L4D2, and Portal2 just fine on ArchLinux. Probably the same on Ubuntu, but easier to set up.

Thanks Skittle! I'll probably install Ubuntu then. I'll have to check that link to see what will run and what won't.
