I have a custom built computer which originally had 4 x 2GB RAM but one of the sticks went bad somehow and now I'm down to 6GB of RAM. Where can I purchase a single 2GB stick that will be compatible?

CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMX4GX3M2A1600C9

I was able to find where I originally purchased it from but it only comes in 2x2GB. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145260

And why is the RAM actually more expensive now than when I bought it in March 2011 for $40?

Thanks!

I dunno, must just be one of those items where they're only selling in it pairs now. You could either try to find on on ebay (even most of those are in pairs though, so your likely option would be to buy a set for ~$30 if you can and hold on to the extra)...

Honestly, you'd probably be better off just getting a new 2x4GB set, maybe even a little faster like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231445

And then sell the three old sticks off. You'd probably make enough money back that your total cost would be the same or less than finding an identical stick(s) to your current set. I'd personally also prefer running two sticks at 1.5V than four sticks at 1.65V+ just for stability and ease-of-use purposes.

As for the price increases, this seems to happen every time they introduce a new RAM standard. The old kind keeps going up in price as demand weakens, and the price of the new kind gradually comes down. For a while, they're both higher than usual. It happened with the switch from DDR2 to DDR3 also. Probably economy of scale in production, is my guess.

Thanks for the advice!

I'm not sure about the 2x4GB because with my current setup there is almost no room to spare and anything taller wouldn't fit. I'm not sure if they list the dimensions anywhere but the 2x4GB looks taller than my 2GB sticks. I may just have to buy the 2x2GB and have a spare.
