Hi,

So I have been thinking a lot about upgrading my drives recently. I have an SSHD which is my main drive as such i have about 600GB used up. I have a Windows 7 installation and I am contemplating a move to Windows 8.1.

On my current machine, I sometimes encounter some situations where explorer.exe hangs and I can't click anything on the start menu, i suspect that for some reason the OS's files are fragmented on the drive and that nothing but a fresh install would fix it, however i wonder if i would need to if i buy an SSD and migrate all of it.

My question is this: Should i re-install the OS on an SSD or should I migrate to an SSD to preserve the applications and data and simply upgrade to windows 8.1
Also recommendations on what flavor of Windows 8.1, if i was doing a full system upgrade at a later point would the OS work at all if it was an OEM version?
Thanks in advance.

well i think you should install the os onto the ssd and windows 8.1 pro 64bit would be the best selection for you ..you can use the hd for seconday storage

Clean install on the new SSD is recommended.

Currently, you have 600GB used. Unless you buy a 1TB SSD, it will be FAR easier to just install clean in the new drive.

Thanks both for the replies. I downloaded an app from microsoft to test my system in regards to an upgrade, only a limited amount of apps would need a re-install afterwards, however like what you said USAFRet and jbrown156 a fresh install not only makes sense but is the best approach.
I would pick a best answer, however both of you seem to have pretty much hit the nail on the head with the same recommendations.
