Hello,

I own a Dell Optiplex 745 Desktop (Motherboard model 0gx297) and I want to upgrade from the CPU I currently have. I was wondering if this CPU would be compatible with my hardware: "http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SLANU-Intel-Xeon-Quad-Core-E5430-2-66Ghz-12Mb-Cache-CPU-/191325227983?pt=UK_Computing_CPUs_Processors&hash=item2c8bdf4bcf" If not are there any other Quad-cores that will work with my machine?

Thanks in advance.

Northwain,

Checking benchmarks baselines on Passmark Perforamnce Test, it appears the highest rated Optiplex 745; use >

1: Core2 Extreme Q6800 @2.93GHz (4-core)
2: Core2 Quad Q6700 at 2.66 Ghz
3 through 15: Quad Q6600 at 2.4 Ghz
16: Core2 Duo E8400 at 3.0GHz (2-core)

> so, the Optiplex 745 is using LGA775 CPU's of 1066 FSB with 65nm lithography.

Of course, the faster, higher core count is attractive, but If you are not using multithreaded applications, the Core2 Duo E8400 at 3.0GHz is a good choice- slightly higher clock speed and less expensive than the quad cores. The Core2 Extreme Q6800 start at about $90 while the E8400 start at $25 (10.14).

When changing the CPU, it's perfect time to upgraded the BIOS. Go to dell.com > support > downloads > BIOS

It appears that these CPUs are getting good results are in combination with:

Radeon HD 6450, 5570, 3450 5670
GeForce 630, 210

> It's well to keep the good performing cards that can be used in mind as the Optiplex 745 has limitations on graphics card size and the power use.

I recently upgraded a Dell Precision 390 which also uses LGA775, changing the 2-core 1.86 to a Xeon x3230 quad core at 2.67 and the CPU score went from 613 to 3642- good results for $45!

I like getting the old crocks to run well.

Cheers,

Hello, you have managed to upgrade the processor Xeon e5430

Reginant,

The Xeon E5430 2.66GHz processor does not work in the Optiplex 745. The E5430 uses DDR3-1066 or 1333 RAM and the Optiplex 745 uses DDR2 which is maximum of 800Mhz.

The fastest processors for the Optiplex 745 are:

1. Core2 Extreme Q6800 @2.93GHz (4-core)
2. Core2 Quad Q6700 at 2.66 Ghz
3 to15: Quad Q6600 at 2.4 Ghz
16. Core2 Duo E8400 at 3.0GHz (2-core)
