Hey everyone,

Windows 7 Professional 64bit
Intel i7 3820 3.60 GHz
16 GB DDR3 @ 666MHz
EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Superclocked
Samsung U28D590D 4K 28 inch UHD Monitor
1TB Samsung SSD
ASRock X79 Extreme4 Motherboard

Recently I upgraded my rig to a EVGA Superclocked GTX 980 and I also bought the Samsung UHD 28 inch 4K monitor. I am running a 1.2 DisplayPort cable from the GPU to the monitor and have drivers up to date, 344.16 from NVIDIA, and I got the monitor's driver from Samsung.

My issues is, when running the monitor in 60Hz, 3840 X 2160, and I start a game, Skyrim for example, the entire machine just locks up once I load my saved data or shortly after, and I lose all display and I have to restart. Interesting enough, I usually have to restart several times for the display to come back. It will show the BIOS screen, and the Windows startup, but will not go into the blue login screen unless I restart it 2-3 times, and eventually it starts up properly.

Some games, like World of Warcraft will startup and run just fine, but suddenly the machine will lock up again, screen goes black, and have to do the restart schenanigans to get it back. If I go 30Hz, and the same resolution, most games seem to be fine and the machine won't crash, however Skyrim still will crash on me, but the machine will not lock up, just the game crashes.

Sounds like the monitor isn't playing well with the GPU and wonder if there is anything I can do. Is one 980 enough for this 4K monitor and/or could it be some other issue like NVIDIA's driver?

I'm really scratching my head on this one so far.

Thanks,

Ken

Xtreme Gear 800W ATX PSU Model: XG-P800. Also every time I restart the computer regardless if it locked up before or not I will have to restart 2-3 times for it to get to the login screen.

Fair enough and definitely a thought I had as well. You think the PSU is failing or just can't push out enough power to keep up with the demands from the monitor?

I dont have a clue, but Xtreme Gear PSUs are garbage. And trying to push that many pixels around may be beyond what it is capable of. It is worth a shot, if you dont want to do that, try testing your RAM. But I think youll find the PSU is crap.

If I set graphical settings to low for games like Batman Arkham Origins and Skyrim that seems to resolve the issue, but I'm not sure what particular setting might be causing the issue or if I just need games set to low on 4K unless I have two 980s?

I have exactly the same issue. Change PSU fra 1000W Corsair to 1200W Chieftec same problem persists. I also tried different sli bridge and reinstall computer, for me the issue comes afterlonger period when gaming with sli. 3D mark fire strike also crashes every singel time.

Hi,

I am not sure if this will help as I don't have the 980. But this problem of running 4k via DP and Samsung 590d using 295x2 have been discussed before and I am still having them until today.
I feel it may have something to do with the 4k processing by the card and the DP port.
Drivers may have contributed to the problem, but I am quite sure that it is not the card itself per se.
Maybe a message to NVdia may help?

My solution would be to only use the graphic driver and do not install the samsung LCD apps.

good luck.

Thanks Kal and Franz. I was starting to think me only having one 980 was the problem and you needed 2 for 4k but if you're having problems still Franz and you run two maybe Kal is right about the card just not processing the 4k right.

I've had a similar issue. My computer would hard crash seemingly anytime I left it alone. I inspected the event viewer and found that the nvidia driver was crashing and likely causing this. Later I narrowed it down to being an issue with the monitor sleeping or being turned off. Every time this happened, boom. Driver crash. I even started having issues booting after these crashes. I rolled back a few driver releases and this fixed things.

Researched a bit online, specifically the nvidia driver feedback threads on their site, and this seems to be a known and somewhat widespread issue with displayport and their latest drivers. I've had no issue at all when connecting with HDMI, and I've stopped my driver crashes by rolling back to 340.52. I don't know exactly what release brought this all on, but I'm stable here at 340.52 and will stay here until nvidia gets things together.

Hope this can help someone that's lost.

I am in the same trouble - Zotac GeForce GTX 980, using driver ForceWare 344.80, Bios 84.04. IF.00.D3, and an Ausus PB287Q 4k monitor. I had great hopes for the new hotfix driver but I continue to have the same problems. They are crashing when watching certain YouTube videos (usually the advertisements) and when I play World of Warcraft (latest game).

I have clean installed the drivers, I have reinstalled windows 8.1, I have reinstalled just about everything twice, I have tried running higher voltages (I have a Thermaltake Toughpower XT 1375W so I figure this is plenty of power). I also have the monitor and video card connected via displayport cables.

I really think the problem is with the NVidia drivers. They made the hotfix to correct the problems that are on my list but the problems continue. I crash while in WoW sometimes every 2 to 3 minutes whereas other times the game will run for over an hour with no issues. I would post on NVidia but from what I read there NVidia doesn't read their forum posts. So, hopefully they read this area. I sure wish I could use my new equipment.

System
Ausu Sabertooth Z97 Motherboard
Intel Core i7-4790k processor
Patriot Viper 3 - 16GB DDR3 x 2
Cooler Master Nepton Liquid Water Cooling System
Zotac ZT-90204-10P GeForce GTX980 AMP! Edition 4GB
Asus PB287Q 4k Monitor

Same issue as everyone esle here. same monitor.

Windows 7 Pro 64
intel i5 2400k
16 GB DDR3 Corsair
MSi GeForce GTX980
Samsing u28D590D
256 SSD
>>>600W<<< Corsair PSU.

It is not power as some people have mentioned. it is definitely not heat. my machine runs fine on 500W you do NOT need 1200W to run this card. WoW runs perfectly well in 1 instance running at 4k. doesnt even come close to taxing the card with high settings on everything. Same thing, with a shut down, needs to be power cycled 3-4 times before windows come back perfectly. This happens as SOON as i open a second instance of WoW. even with the first barely taxing the card. (FPS drops to 10 when minimized. Was starting to think it was just windows 7 being too old, but Olddog010 seems to be having issues with windows 8.1 as well.

Hey guys i used to have this issue before when i was overclocking and failed to clean certain parts on my board.

Typically that hard reset is blamed on the PSU, but in my case and what i think it is for others is the northbride on the motherboard is overheating. And this is very well possible with the new strain a 4k display and graphics card is gonna put on that northbridge. Specially if your running a sli. When doing these test monitor your northbridge temps via HW monitor. And clean out your system of any dust!! my northbridge heatsink was soo full of dust because it gets hidden under my noctua huge rad air cooler. So i had to do a full rebuild to expose the northbridge to clean it out. Since i have dont that i no longer have random resets.

This is just a good example of how this leap in power is gonna be held back by certain bottlenecks. Like how nvidia was saying for the new 1000 series of cards after maxwell they might make these new series of cards only support on newer motherboards to avoid say such an issue. Because also the new motherboards will support the proper technology that's gonna help the 1000 series card talk with the cpu better via DX 12, bigger bus pipes, yada yada

Hi guys, I have the same problem, but not playing games, I have two monitors, one is the 4k Samsung (display port), the other is an LG 22" 1920x1080 (with hdmi)... I have an GTX 670... so, when I'm working on 3dsmax on the 4k monitor, it reboot my systme in 1 minute... if I move the 3dsmax windows to the LG, it doesnt restar my pc!... maybe is a problem with Windows, Directx?... remember, the resolution is 4 times than the full hd!!!

Hi guys same problem; 2 980s in sli. Either frozen or hard crash after sleep. Sometimes the sli option isnt in the nvidia control panel. Samsung uhd 4k via display, which usually fail. Samsung uhd 65 tv via hdmi 2.0 which is intermittent but whatever is plugged into hdmi usually will come back on after a restart or three.

I have the same issue here. Not same monitor but I am using the display port connector as well. I have a request, please don't tell people that is a heating /dust problem because it isn't. I used a heat camera on my right and nothing went over 40 Celsius. I READ the card, I rolled back drivers, changed my mobo with the msi gaming 5 Z and I changed my RAM. Nothing changed. I suggest to try dark souls 2 at 4K to test it because it seems to "call" the hard reset crash for those who have this issue. I will RMA the card again and try to change monitor. Ps. I tried the dp connector as well and the psu.

same issue here, asus STRIX GTX 980, crashes on eve online and wolfenstain after a few minutes of gameplay.

same PC was rock solid with GTX 570 from 2011. 850 W power supply and no dust whatsoever. Driver 353.30

will try lowering the video settings, right now everything is on high/ultra.

Update:
problem was power related. the card has 2 power connectors 6 pin and 8 pin. it also comes with a Y shaped cable adapter where 2 x 6 pin connectors go into 1 x 8 pin. So I assumed that both of my 12 volt rails (6 pin male) need to plug into that Y shaped adapter and then go into the 8 pin connector on the card. Leaving the 6 ping connector on the card empty. This worked as long as there was on load on the card. Under load it crashed reliably every time.

So I connected 1 of my 12 volt rails to the 6 pin connector on the card. the other 12 volt rail went into the Y shaped adapter and then into the 8 pin connector on the card.

I wish I knew why ASUS decided to make 1 x 8 pin and 1 x 6 pin connector on the card instead of 2 x 6 pin.
