PC freezes on boot if external plugged in

Been trying to figure this out for a while now, any help would be greatly appreciated (about to give up). The computer freezes during boot (at splash screen) if an external 2tb or larger is plugged in. I have tried several 1tb drives an no issues, Yet my seagate 3tb and 5tb cause this.

I have tried: updating drivers though windows, searched for a bios update (none), disabled legacy, changed boot order in bios, reformatted drive, made partition inactive, disabled/enabled secure boot... all out of ideas.

Windows 8.1 on a Lenovo K450 desktop.

Edit: It appears the problem is the PC is trying to boot from the external. First the pc seems to check the internal drive (light flashes for a bit), then the external, and chooses to go with the external causing the lockup.

Make sure external drives are unplugged from PC before booting it up. I have same issue and that's what I do to workaround it. It's no big deal to me anyhow now because I always put my PC in sleep mode at night instead of shutting it down, so very rarely do I need to reboot.

Yeah, for now I have the externals on a separate power strip I can easily reach. Just have to remember to flip the switch after/when I shut down and power up. Frustrating to deal with considering how simple a fix it should be from the manufacturers side (bios or firmware). I use the drives for storage and backups (business and personal), so it's an issue that could potentially cause problems. Funny, this is the first prebuilt desktop I have bought in about 15 years, and the one I've had the most issues with. Never again...
