Little confusing wireless networking issue

Hey folks, I'm having a bit of a problem with my computer here. So, I built this thing back in '10 and it's been working like a charm since, but last week I reformatted my computer(it needed it really badly) and I've managed to successfully reinstall all the stuff I generally used to use before i had formatted it. I was able to connect and use my computer just fine last night, and since I had reformatted it, it had a bunch of updates(155 to be exact) to install, Today I booted it up and it got all of the configuring over and done with, but now I can't seem to use the internet, even though the thing says it's connected with internet. The router and modem work, I'm typing this up with my Macbook on the same network as my PC, and I'm not sure if it's a browser issue or what, because when I ping google.com, I get a response, and when I try the ipconfig/release stuff, that doesn't really seem to do much. I have a little NetGear thumbdrive that I use as something of a wireless networking card and I've installed the drivers for it on my computer, so it's all good and set. But as I said, it was working before the update. Could Windows Update have potentially fudged something up?

If you folks would like some hardware specs, I would be happy to provide them, but if I don't need to, the computer has some weight to it and it is rather higher up in my room and I hate trying to bring it down to crack it open and try to remember what all I threw in there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you can ping google then your internet is working. You might be having a browser issue.

Download google chrome or firefox (or both) from another computer. Move it to the computer with the problem. See if they work.

You can also install PCwizard to check what parts you have.

I have tried that, I actually swear by using Chrome. I've tried using both Chrome and IE and neither seem to be working.

First depending on your OS make sure telnet is installed, the later windows version do not turn this on by default.

Try
Telnet www.google.com 80
GET

You will not accomplish much the goal is to see if you get a screen of junk. If it works it means it is purely in the browser that you have a issue. If it does not then you may have something like firewall settings blocking you.

Are there any specific error messages? Are you able to test by plugging the PC directly into the router via Ethernet cable?

One suggestion:
Check the Control Panel > Network and Internet > Internet Options > Connections tab > LAN Settings.

Make sure "Automatically detect settings" is the only item with a check mark.

@bill001g
Is that just a program I can download on another computer and install?

@BuddhaScoota(i butchered your name I think, sorry!)
I have just done the bit in the control panel. In order to do anything with Ethernet, I would have to drill some holes through the floor, which my dad doesn't seem very keen on.

Thanks for you guy's help, though!

Telnet is part of windows and used to just work in releases before windows vista. It is now considered a option feature of windows that is preinstalled but disabled. It is enable on the install screen but it is actually already on the machine.

If you can no longer ping you have a completely different issue. You want to ping 192.168.1.1 if that works then you have basic connectivity to your router. You would then want to ping 8.8.8.8 or some other well know ip to see if it just a DNS issue. It can be many many things when you have no connectivity.

Alright, just enabled it, says it cannot make a connection with the host, Google(Could not open connection to the host on port 80: Connect failed), but when I ping 192.168.1.1 and 8.8.8.8, both do receive responses.

This is acting like you have a firewall blocking port 80. It almost has to be a firewall on your PC since you are obviously able to post here using another device.

Surprisingly enough, I managed to disable it and it seems to work now.
Can't believe I didn't think of that.
Well, much appreciation, bill, you've the best solution mark for this one! Thank you very much! :)
