Hello.
I have a a Toshiba Satellite C55T A5222. It recently took a tumble, and the case, the digitizer, and the motherboard craked. I can replace booth, but I figure it might be easier just to get a new version of the same model.

Will I have to reinstall Win 8.1 if I just swap hardrives? How can I do that with OEM software?

It might be smarter to ghost, or clone the drive. Will I have to re-install then?

Thank you for your time.

If you swap in a new mobo, the preinstalled windows recognizes it as a new computer. You should (shoooooouuuld) be able to call microsoft, explain the problem and they'll reactive the product key.

When you say you can get a new version of the same model, are you talking about a new pc? If you do that, you can add your current hdd to the new system and just run both, not having lost any of your data.

With the OS, there are two issues:

Operation and licensing

Operation - will it boot? Given identical hardware, probably.

Licensing - The OEM is licensed to that original motherboard. But in case of a replacement for a broken board, that is almost certainly not a problem. You may have to activate via the phone robot, or actually have to call and talk to a human.
But for a broken and replaced board, almost certainly not an issue.
