Can i network hard drives together?

Would this work? Connect macbook pro #1 to macbook pro #2 using thunderbolt. Connect macbook pro #1 to external hard drive through usb 3.0.

Would macbook pro #2 have access to the external hard drive??

Probably. If macbook 1 shared the drive then macbook 2 could have access to it. It would depend on what macbook 1 wanted to be externally accessible. BUT after a little searching, it doesn't look like you can network on thunderbolt... Thunderbolt 2 does support peer to peer networking, but it doesn't look like original thunderbolt did...
