Good monitor for a gaming rig?

What's a good quality monitor for a $1k gaming rig? Preferably under 400$. There are so many to choose from but I don't know what is good now because I haven't bought one in many years. I don't really care about the touchscreen, 3D and 4k stuff.

My personal choice, a 27 inch screen that runs at 144hz, does not do 3d but can be upgraded to if wanted in the future.
