is this gpu dead???

I just got a used gpu an r9 280x from amazon and i connected all the wires and all the fans start but it says it cant find it in device manager?

Did you install the drivers? Is it outputting from the GPU?

So, what you did after getting the GPU was:
1.Remove the current GPU from your computer.
2.Put the R9 280X in its place - secure it with the screws, connect the power cables and the monitor cable to it and then start the computer.

Did you do it like that?

Does the screen show any image or does it remain black?
If you do get into Windows like that, go check Device Manager again and it should show something like a generic plug and play or something like that, under "Display". Remember you need to install the drivers for the GPU in order for it to be detected. If you haven't received any DVD with your graphics card, you can download the drivers from here:
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Make sure you install everything and restart your computer once the set-up is finished.

If you have any trouble doing anything like that, post some updates here.

I never had a gpu before in this pc i just built it after getting it i did that same as you stated but did not remove another gpu

asrock h97 pro4
8 gigs of ram 1600
I-5 4960k
r9 280x XFX
and a 650 watt psu
