So I currently have a pre-built HP Desktop (worst decision ever), and am about to rebuild it as a gaming rig. Just today, I realized I overlooked how to get the pre installed Windows 8.1 OEM to my new hard drive AND with a new motherboard, because from my reading on these forums, you can't just simply do that. I was wondering is there ANY simple way around this short of just buying a new Windows 8 disk???

My current system has an AMD mobo, and the new one will be an Intel mobo.

Usually you can just install Windows 8/8.1 on another computer as it isn't tied to a motherboard, but I'm not sure about your version as it came pre-installed on a pre-built computer and I would guess that it's a DSP OEI copy.

You can't transfer the copy of W8.1 since it's specifically tied to the HP. You're going to have to buy a new copy, no way around it.

Ah. But I have been reading around these forums and others say that it is indeed tied to the mobo.In which case am I just completely out of luck or is there any way around this...?

Ah! This is what I was afraid of... There is really no way around this? It seems to me that Microsoft would be smart enough to have a workaround.

Well, if you could take a copy of Windows from a prebuilt and use it over and over, Microsoft would never make any money since people would just use that one copy forever and ever.

Yeah XP, Vista and 7 are tied to the motherboard but they took a different route with 8/8.1, a lot of people get confused, for you though, there unfortunately probably isn't a way round :(

You could try but it doesnt mean it'll activate. Why would MS have a workaround, thats why it's OEM
