Is my Dark Rock 3 not Rocking ?

Hello all,

Today I installed a Dark Rock 3 Pro in my system, which was a feat of strength in itself. The thing is so massive that I can't even tell if the heat sink is making contact with the CPU.

In the BIOS the CPU reads 32c, this doesn't seem right because the ambient temperature is around 29c. I didn't take that for granted so I used RealTemp for an OS reading of 35c.

This is where I think the problem is - when I reach my fingers around to the heatpipes directly above the CPU they are cold, not room temp but actually Cold. I can't feel any heat anywhere on the fins either.

I then run Prime95 for 40 mins the cpu peaked at 68c with an average of 60c. (still no heat at all from heatpipes)

My case is all Air-cooled - 9 x 120mm - 2 x 140mm, but surely this kind of passive cooling could not cool a 3770k without contact to the cooler right ?

The screws on the back-plate are as tight as I would like to go, anymore and I fear I'll tear some silicone. Anyone have a clue what I should do here ?

With all those fans your case might soon take off.

I've got 4 fans in total in my case - 1 on the CPU cooler, 1 in the PSU and the dual fan on my GPU. You've got 13-14? How can you stand all the noise?

Back to your topic - if you BIOS readings and your software readings in Windows show the same thing then there is nothing to worry about. If your CPU was overheating you would have known as it would start throttling itself down or just shut the PC down.

Hehe, most of them are Quiet edition fans, I only have them running at 1200-1500rpm and I cannot tell the difference between these and a system with two or three fans. The chassis I have probably helps muffle the sound.

I just played some intensive games to get a real world idea of temps and i'm peaking at 55c and in this heat that's pretty good. It's like 32c + outside and I have no A/C.

Just looked at CPU-Z and AFAIK 3,700mhz is about right, so no throttling.

I still don;t understand why there is no heat on the actual cooler?!?!

"I still don;t understand why there is no heat on the actual cooler?!?!"

To be fair I can't feel any on my CPU cooler either but I only imagine this is due to the fact that the heat disappears before it reaches the spots we can touch. After all the senors showing the temps are build into the chip and are not on the actual cooler. If you were to remove the heatsink and turn on your PC and keep your finger on your actual CPU you will definitely feel the heat. Plus our body temperature is roughly about 36.5 C so if the cooler itself was getting about 40-45 C it would only feel slightly warm to the touch but definitely not hot.
