I just hooked up my i5 4690k and sabertooth z97 mark2. Thought since i've got the capability I might as well do a bit of overclocking. I saw a video about asus 5 way optimization that looked real sweet. Did all the overclocking for you and seemed to get the rig to it's max potential safely. Is there anything like this available for the mark 2? Or is overclocking all manually messing with 1 setting at a time? I definitely don't want to screw anything up. Thanks!

You don't want to use the automatic overclocking in most cases. It's ramps the voltage too high playing on the safe side for stability and is potentially more apt to cause additional heat or long term damage. It can be used, but it's more effective to do it yourself. A lot depends on the motherboard, power supply and cpu cooler. You don't mention the cooler or the PSU model and that's where you want to start.

You should not overclock with the stock cooler and you should not overclock with a budget or cheap PSU.

That Alienware PSU is questionable and I would never overclock with it especially if you have a high end graphics card. The configuration of supplied power on the 12V rails is apparently not good and many folks have had problems with them. I can't seem to find out who makes the PSU for Alienware but am looking into that. That's a good board and cpu and I'd want a quality PSU in there even if I'm not overclocking. What is the model of your graphics card?

Currently using a hand me down gtx 580. Not cutting edge by any means but still sold till I can afford to upgrade. I kind of blew my cash wad on the cpu and mobo. Running as is I can play shadows of mordor on high settings. It wants a 2gb card for high, but I run just fine. Card heats up but not dangerously. Psu never gets hot. Don't know if that means anything or not.

It doesn't. Mean anything that is. It's good that it doesn't heat up but that doesn't mean it's a capable unit. The specs don't look terrible but that may not mean anything. Advertised specs are often not met by actual supply on cheap units. I'd wait to overclock or to get a better card until you have a Tier 2B or higher PSU.

I don't mind waiting. I tried doing some digging on the psu also but the only info I found was people saying the alienware psu's are great quality. I know you can't believe everything you read, especially on the internet. I will upgrade stuff as i get money. On the list is an ssd, New video card and faster ram someday and now probably a psu. Theoretically, if i did start to tinker with it using the current psu, what's the worst that could happen? Is the potential damage all to the psu or could I fry other hardware?

The power supply is the only component that can take out every single other component. Check out the following threads, they are very enlightening. If you are going to upgrade any components, the PSU should be first on the list. I'm going to do a little more digging, as I said, to see what the skinny is on that unit since there's not much information about it and as you say, those user reviews don't hold any weight, especially as compared to a professional review. It does concern me that there doesn't seem to be ANY professional reviews on it. Pretty much any unit worthy of being reviewed has a review somewhere.

I checked out the links. Very informative. Did a little more looking around on this alienware psu. I'm still not finding anything terrible about it. Found some sites that sell it or used to and they list specs that seem to be respectable.. Heres 1 I checked out-

Please let me know if I'm missing a glaring flaw or if you find different info. thanks! :)

Well, if you feel the PSU is trustworthy, which I am uncertain about, here is a good guide to overclocking. As I said before, automatic overclocking, aside from the Turbo boost that's generally done by default, is usually a sure way to shorten the life of your hardware, especially without a good quality PSU. But, it's your hardware and you've got a good motherboard so perhaps it will work out fine.

All of the overclocking features can be found in the AI Tweaking section of the BIOS. You need to switch from EZ to Advanced mode to access those options.

I'll check out the guide but probably won't do any tweaking yet. I'm not totally sold on the PSU either, just sharing the bit of info I found with you. Chances are unless I find solid info on who manufactures the unit and how reliable they are, ill probably snag a new PSU on a black friday deal and tweak my rig around christmas time.

That sounds like a smart plan. Either way you go, don't hesitate to ask if you have further questions I or other Tom's members may be able to help with. Good luck.
