I as looking into investing in a soundcard and was wondering if I really needed one or if the on board sound on my MB is good enough. I also planned on getting these headphones too. http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Special-Edition-Perfor...

If my on board sound won't be good enough than what good sound card do you recommend?
Thanks in advance.

what i do is use the optical out on my motherboard and i bought a nice portable amp (there are some real high quality high fidelity units out there nowadays) and i use that for all gaming music listening purposes. This also means you can hook it up to your cell phone while traveling and other such uses.

I wish i could remember the names of all of the good ones but i had a friend who is an audiophile help me out at that time

Thanks for the answers guys, sorry for the late reply. Would you recommend a DAC over a dedicated sound card?

a new sound card will have a dac on it.

the two most important things that you need are a great dac and also the clean amperage to power the drivers you are going to be using.

Cool. Apologies, I meant an external DAC from brands like Audioengine or fiiO. I couldn't edit my post as I kept getting an error. Sorry I am new when it comes to seeking good audio quality and what is needed.

a fiio is what i use an i could not be happier. I use it from my computer when i am in the car or even at the gym. I was very happy with quality. It is a great place to start and you can get your money back out of it if you ever want to sell it.

I like the portability

Thank you very much for you response everyone. Would you recommend an Audioengine D1? Been hearing good things about that one. I have these headphones the Sennheiser PC 350's and they have a microphone as well. The Audioengine D1 only has a headphone jack and no mic input. WOuld one of these fix the issue? I want to be able to use the mic my headphones have. Thanks. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IM36VU0/ref=s9_simh...

my first one was the FiiO E17 Alpen Portable Headphone Amplifier USB DAC.

the one big recommendation if you plan on traveling with the device at all is to not get a plastic one as they so not hold up well
